The Suez Canal: Who planned and constructed it? Frenchman Ferdinand de Lesseps. When was it finished? November 1869 What were the benefits and disadvantages of the construction? First salt-water passage between the Mediterranean and Red seas. As well as after the Suez Canal was built the whole region to have become navigable. How did the canal support nation building or imperialism? It lead to faster and better trade. (Not too sure about this one :| ) What role did technology play in the construction? Many technical problems occurred because during construction. But eventually with built more technology to overcome that. (I'll right more if you like @lovebug86 )
THANK YOU! can you go into the technology part a little more please?
Sure :) Give me a minute or so.
What role did technology play in the construction? The Suez Canal is a flat sea level canal (There was no lock systems). It was dug using forced labor. Early steam powered shovels existed but were not used. The main tools used were most likely have been hand picks, shovels and wheelbarrows. There is an engraving from 1869 which shows construction steam trains moving objects, presumably for the removal of materials(rocks/dirt) from the site, but there is no other equipment visible in the carving.
Thanks SOOO much! this really helped me!
No problem. :)
@Opcode is there any disadvantages?
@lovebug86 It was created with manual labor. Manual labor, people digging with shovels and picks. This could have injured or worse killed some people.
good point! thanks! =D
No problemo :)
@Opcode sorry to ask somthing else but do you know all those things about the Panama Canal?
A little: System: I know it used a lock system. Labor: Many died during trying to build it. (Mosquitoes aka Malaria.) Owner: La Société internationale du Canal Principal engineer: John Findlay Wallace, John Frank Stevens (1906–1908), George Washington Goethals Completed: August 15, 1914
so who built it?
Look under "Principal engineer", you have to give credit to both.
oh ok i see! thanks!
ABRIEF HISTORY OF S CANAL The Suez Canal, located in Egypt, is a 101 mile (163 km) long canal that bonds the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez, a northern branch of the Red Sea. It was publicly opened in November 1869. Though the Suez Canal wasn’t formally completed until 1869, there is a long history of notice in connecting both the Nile River in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. It is said that the first canal in the area was built linking the Nile River delta and the Red Sea in the 13th Century B.C.E. During the 1,000 years following its construction, the original canal was ignored and its use lastly stopped in the 8th Century.
