simplify y+y

OpenStudy (vortish):

y + y is 2y because y =1

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

y stands for an unknown amount. It could be 3, 6, -2 or any other number. You don't know what it is, but what you do know is that every y you see in this problem stands for the same number. If I told you have 1 orange + 1 orange, you can say you have 2 oranges. If you have a bag full of apples and another bag full of apples. They both contain the same number of apples, but you don't know how many in either bag. You can say you have 2 bags full of apples. Similalrly, if you have y + y you have 2 y's. That is written a 2y, since y alone means 1y. So no matter what number y stands for y + y = 1y + 1y = 2y

ok thankyou :D

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You're welcome.

OpenStudy (vortish):

you are welcome

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

BTW @vortish, y can be 1, but it may be anyhthing else too.

OpenStudy (vortish):

i know that but this was a question i understand how to work so

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes, your answer is correct but your reason isn't. y + y = y(1 + 1) = y(2) = 2y It has nothing to do with y = 1.
