OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone quiz me on algebra?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is a big subject. Did you have something in mind?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um. parellel and perpendicular lines. like tell if an equation is parallel, perpendicular or neither.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

quetions like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im trying to practice for the interim so any question is basically good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. First how do you tell if an two lines, given their equations, are parallel or perpindicular?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if they're parallel then they will have the same slope but different y-intercepts. if they're perpendicular then they'll have opposite reciprocal slopes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got it so tell me if these two equations are parallel, perpindicular, or neither \[y=12x+4\]\[y=144x/12+13\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

neither

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aw

OpenStudy (abb0t):

What is the equation of the line: perpendicular to the line 4x + 5y - 20 = 0 and passing through the point (8, -3)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if u divide 144 by 12 its 12 so it cant be..ooohh.its parallel

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got it! Now try abbOt's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i solved 4x5y-20=0 and got y=-4/5x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it right so far?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

slope, yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the y-intercet right?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

yes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wart?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and im not sure abut all those dots after ye

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (abb0t):

wat did u mea by "is it y-intercept"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but either way then i substituted x and y with the point (8,-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oih if it was right

OpenStudy (abb0t):

well, what did you get as the equation of the line perpendicular?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still havnt finihed it. im making sure im doing it right so far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i plugged in the points. i have -3=-4/5x8+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i got -3=-32/5+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it right so far?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Not quite.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i not supposed to have the 4?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

your slope is not quite correct.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

for the first part of the equation. It should be perpendicular.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i should flip the slope before i plug in the points?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i might be getting it but i want to know if i put 4 or b in the second part.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its b now that i look at it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the equation would be y=5/4x-13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The gradient of any line perpendicular to the line 3x-2y+12=0 is \[a)\frac{3}{2}\] \[b)-\frac{3}{2}\] \[c)\frac{2}{3}\] \[d)-\frac{2}{3}\] Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats gradient?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gradient=slope.
