So we have four sentences here. And our job is to pick the grammatically correct sentence. The KEY WORD in all these four sentences is ESTAR. ESTAR means "to be." And there are different ways to conjugate (change) the word ESTAR, so that we can have many different forms, such as "I AM," "you ARE," "he IS," etc. Of course, we won't be conjugating them into English. We'll be doing it in Spanish. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are all the different forms of ESTAR, in Spanish: (Yo) Estoy --- (I) am (Tú) Estás -- (You) are (Él/Ella/Usted) Está -- (He/She) is (Nosotros) Estamos -- (We) are (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) Están -- (They) are ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So, once again, we have four sentences, and we have to choose the one that is grammatically correct. The one that's using the correct form of ESTAR. Let's look at your first sentence: "Ella ESTOY muy bien." Question: Since ELLA is the subject of the sentence, would it be correct to use ESTOY? Answer: No, it wouldn't. If you take a look at the conjugation list that I showed you, we can see that we would need to use "está." Not "estoy." So, the first sentence is incorrect. And we still need to find the correct sentence. If you just look at the subject of each sentence, and use the conjugation chart that I showed you, I'm sure you can figure it out.

Oh, just a quick side note here: "Tú" and "usted" both mean "you." The difference is that "tú" is an INFORMAL way of saying "you," like if you were talking to your friends, or you dog. "Usted" is a FORMAL way of saying "you," like when you're talking to an older person. A teacher maybe.

Thank you :) this helps a lot.

You think you know the answer to this problem set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, i got the right answer :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, it's the last one. "Ustedes están muy cansados" is totally correct. It means "You are very tired." "Ustedes" is how we address multiple people directly, at once.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Y de nada.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plus its looking for a verb which makes its easier. :) aha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, of course. Once we memorize how to conjugate verbs, Spanish gets a whole lot easier.
