2x+y=3 -4x-4y=-8

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Look at the coefficients. If you double the coefficients of the first equation, and add the second equation, you'll have 4x - 4x = 0 and be left with an equation only in terms of y. You can solve that, then plug the value of y into either of the original equations and find x. Alternatively, multiplying the first equation by 4 and adding the second equation would give you 4y - 4y = 0 and you would be left with an equation only in terms of x.
