I really didn't know the answer to this question, so I did some research, and pulled up this article: http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/D/Diffusion.html (Look under "Direct Active Transport.") And also this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Na%2B/K%2B-ATPase (Look under "Resting Potential.") ~~~~~~~~~~ Both of these articles tell us that the concentration of sodium ions INSIDE the cell is LOWER than the concentration of sodium ions outside the cell. This is apparently so that the cell doesn't fill up with too much water, and burst.
