Help? Find the exact value of the real number y. y = csc-1(-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you mean csc^(-1) of (-1)? it is unclear to know what the problem is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

csc = 1/sin so we now have y = (csc(-1))^-1 so y = (1/sin(-1))^-1 so y = sin(-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the arccsc of -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 3pi/2?

Directrix (directrix):

What is the domain for the arccsc?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whatt? the domain for it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

+ -pi/2, everyone?

Directrix (directrix):

Why would an answer not be - pi/2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think -pi/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, i think -pi/2

Directrix (directrix):

3*pi/2 would yield the -1 also. That's why I asked about the domain used by your text in defining the arccsc. Some books use ArcCsc and the arcCsc to distinguish between all possible solutions to the equation and then only those within the domain of the inverse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, Directrix is completely right,

Directrix (directrix):

I think I should have said "range" everywhere I posted "domain."

Directrix (directrix):

The -pi/2 is within the RANGE of the inverse of the cosecant.
