How do you convert from radians to degrees?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

times it by 180/pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or divide it by pi/180 same thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question is -3 radians

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its -540/pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or do i divide by 180?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, -540/pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you could evaluate that to get a decimal point, but it seems unecessary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they say to round to the nearest degree, -540/pi is still the answer right? since its a whole number right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, if they say to the nearest degree, you have to figure out what -540/pi is in decimal places, then round off

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would divide by 180 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, type -540/pi into a calculator to get a decimal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got -17.18873386

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mover the dp one space to the right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*move

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok, got it, and for when you convert from degrees to radians, do i do the same if i wanted to round it to the nearest hundredth? put it into the calc?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, it's the fastest way. otherwise you could do it by hand, but I don't think that would be easiest because pi is like 3.1419...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

degrees --> radians times by pi/180 radians --> degrees times by 180/pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like for 5pi/6 what do i do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is it we sometimes use 180 as pi and we sometimes don't

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of the unit circle: the circumference of it is 2pi (because it is 2pi*r, and r is 1) we also know that a revolution is 360 degrees so: 2pi=360degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that means 180 degrees=pi radians, but no one really says radians

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WOWWW that makes sense...thanks a lot seriously you answered all of my questions, no ones ever done that, my math teacher hates me so I'm always on this when i get home just to try and pass my trig class, i failed my trig regents with a 64, 1 point shy...so now I'm in the class again. Maybe ill do well this time around, Thanks again! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem :) happy to help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw i don't know if you know what a regents is, its like a state test only for people who live in NY and like pennsylvania, and i live in ny so i had to take it, so yea, so thanks again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem, I'm from Australia so we don't really have those but good luck in the future! What yr are you? I'm a yr 11, just started a few weeks ago

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im a year 11 aswell looks like your smarter than me :P They take SATS in australia? Its like a college admissions test.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did yr 11 maths whilst I was a yr 10 so yea...I may advance in maths but my English is nowhere near as good as my maths yea, SATs. I don't really look that far ahead into the future :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've heard of SATs, but don't know if they have them in Australia. probably do but I ahve my face burried in my maths book so I don't know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see...dont you take your SATs at the end of this year? or is it different in Australia?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know...school has started but I'm actually STILL overseas so I don't really know if SATs have been mentioned yet, or if we even have them. I'll google it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh never mind, but yea there important, I'm already studying for them, anyways it was a nice conversation, never thought i would have one over a website like this, but it was nice talking, oh and thanks for the help, i'll try and lend my help if I see a question I understand :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think in Australia we call them VCE exams or something VCAA exams and we get ATAR scores in Yr 12, ATAR scores are basically ranks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Weird how in different countries they do it differently, would've thought it would be the same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyways, it was nice talking :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you too :)
