How to find the intercepts of a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've been stuck on this problem for a while, x-intercepts of f(x) = \[\frac{ x+7 }{ x^2+5x-3 }\]

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... to find the y intercept let x = 0 so y = -7/3 for the x intercept let y = 0 so x = -7 ( just look at the numerator) as 0 x anything = 0 the curve has vertical asymptotes... two and a hotizontal asymptote

How did you get -7?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well in a fraction the denominator can't be zero... only the numerator can be zero so to find the x intercept let y = 0 so you are solving x + 7 = 0 x = -7
