Which point lies on the graph of the following piecewise function? y = x if x –1 y = x2 if x > –1

OpenStudy (goformit100):

first draw the graphs

What is the first if x -1 condition? I'm assuming it is x <= -1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is (:

Well, you would treat this as two separate items to graph. First, for the values of x<=-1, you would graph as if you were graphing y = x. For example, these points would be (-1,-1) (-2,2) (-5604,-5604) and so forth. For the second condition of x > -1, you graph it as if it were x^2. At x = -1 though, you place an open circle around the point (-1,1) because this part of the graph does not include that point. Then you would draw your parabola y = x^2 that extends to the right of this point.

Does that make the answer (1,1) ? ;o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well (1,1) would be one point on the graph, yes. But the graph has much more points than just (1,1)

Okay, thank you!(:
