What were hardships pioneers faced along the Oregon Trail? http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0210182/hardships.html What was the leading cause of death on the Oregon Trail? Name one. "Cholera, a bacterial disease that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting" http://www.blm.gov/or/oregontrail/history-faqs.php What were the most common types of accident the Oregon Trail? Wagons breaking down. http://www.blm.gov/or/oregontrail/history-faqs.php What were the worst discomforts on the Oregon Trail? The weather. http://www.blm.gov/or/oregontrail/education-kids-trail.php What was used for fuel for fires when the pioneers were crossing the plains? "The "forty-niners" often chose speed over safety and opted to use shortcuts such as the Sublette-Greenwood Cutoff in Wyoming which reduced travel time by almost seven days but spanned nearly 45 miles (72 km) of desert without water, grass, or fuel for fires." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Oregon_Trail How many months would it take to travel to Oregon by wagon? About 4-6 months. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_long_did_it_take_to_travel_the_Oregon_Trail

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (opcode):

That's up to 36.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Woah. Ok, let me write this down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One second:D

OpenStudy (opcode):

What were 3 reasons why most pioneers did Not travel by ship to Oregon I couldn't find anything about this :| But this is what I remember: It was extremely dangerous by raft or canoe. But was horribly expensive by steamship. @PSI there needs to be three reasons but that's all I can remember :( What were two purposes for the forts along the Oregon Trail? 1) To provide a place for travelers to resupply and 2) to provide protection to those travelers and people who had settled in the area. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_were_two_purposes_for_the_forts_on_the_oregon_trail List 7 forts along the Oregon Trail. http://www.fortwiki.com/File:OregonTrail.jpg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tnx u:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You've helped enough.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll look itup; its ok.

OpenStudy (opcode):

I know :|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for helping me:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you say... "Pioneers weren't able to bring all of their belongings with them when travelling by raft, canoe, or steamship." Rafts and canoes wouldn't have been able to carry all of the necessary supplies, right? And you would be charged for everything you brought onto a steamship, mounting up to the overall cost of travelling by steamship. @Opcode

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First time I ever heard of pioneers travelling by boat to reach Oregon :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol:)

OpenStudy (opcode):

Okay. Mean while. I decide to make a false link: http://os.comyr.com/OregonTrail.php There's your source :)

OpenStudy (opcode):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

41. How did pioneers afford $ for the trip? they either saved money for the trip, sold their land and other possessions or agreed to work for others on the trip. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_did_pioneers_afford_the_trip_west

OpenStudy (anonymous):

44. One common misconception about the travelers journey is that the biggest danger was the Indians or Native Americans. Many movies show the pioneers circling their wagons each night to protect themselves from the threat of the Native Americans. In reality, the wagons were circled to provide a convenient corral for livestock. The Native Americans were actually friendly more often than not. Encounters most often involved simple trades and there were very few of the pioneers that actually died at the hands of the Native Americans in the so-called massacres. http://www.frontiertrails.com/oldwest/oregontrail.htm 45. Many settlers ended their journey at the British outpost of Fort Vancouver, on the north bank of the Columbia River. Here, the fort's commander, John McLoughlin, provided food and medicine to weary travelers. The fort contained a large garden, as well as a library, theater, church and school. Oregon City was located across the river and many pioneers headed there to stake claims and begin their lives anew. http://traveltips.usatoday.com/oregon-trail-start-end-63183.html 46. Following the expiration of the act in 1854 the land was no longer free but cost $1.25 per acre ($3.09/hectare) with a limit of 320 acres (1.3 km2)—the same as most other unimproved government land. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Trail

IKR! Thanks! Brb in 2 mins bathroom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is all worth it to learn about number 44. Before I read that, I thought the complete opposite. Now, on to the others...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, I'm back.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

46. The massacre started on the morning of the 29th of November. Narcissa, who was getting milk for children in her care who were still sick with measles, found that a group of Indians had entered the kitchen of the house. She found their manner alarming and retreated. Marcus went into the kitchen to deal with the Indians. A discussion, heated at times, went on for some time when suddenly a rifle shot was heard. Marcus had been shot, tomahawked from behind, and his face had been slashed. Narcissa, although filled with fear, with the help of another woman who had rushed to the house when the shooting began, moved her husband to the sitting room where she tried to stop the bleeding. Marcus was still conscious and indicated that there was nothing she could do for him. http://www.mman.us/whitmanmassacre.htm 47. Mormons http://www.telemetrix.com/fun/mormons/migration.htm 48. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormons 49. Joseph Smith in upstate New York during the 1820s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormons 50. After the Mormons settled into Illinois, Smith, his brother, and other church leaders were jailed. The reason of the jailing is that they thought the leaders of the Mormons were in charge of the Mormons and if they jailed their leaders, then the whole religion would cease to exist. Fortunately for the church, Brigham Young was not recognized as a leader, and he was not imprisoned. A mob attacked the jail on June 27, 1844, and Joseph Smith and his brother were fatally shot. http://www.telemetrix.com/fun/mormons/migration.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PSI, sorry, I forgot to mention this:/
