*confused* Mrs. Blush is purchasing a new car. The salesperson has offered her $3000 for a trade in on her old car. The price of the new car is $15,600. When the salesperson determined what she would pay for the car, Mrs. Blush noticed she had calculated the 8% sales tax on the car before subtracting the trade in value. Mrs. Blush insisted she subtract the trade in value before calculating the salestax. The salesperson agreed. Determine how much Mrs. Blush saved from this negotiation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the first time she pays this: C = (15600*.08)+15600 - 3000 And after doing it the other way you do this: C = (15600-3000)+.08*(15600-3000)

Find the difference between the two prices.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Mrs. Blush should pay: $15,600 - $3,000 = $12,600 8% tax on $12,600 is $1008 Without crediting the trade-in: Mrs. Blush would pay 8% tax on $15,600 is $1258 The difference is $1258 - $1008
