Given a 3d surface with 4 "ridges" of highest Z values, how could I map the behaviour of those ridges in 2d?

well you could have (x,y) where x is the distance horizontally and y corresponds to the height/length of Z

Right, but I need an equation in 2d (or 2 or 3 or 4 equations) that express the tops of the ridges, which are a set of (x,y) coordinates
