plz help im confused on this question Environmental and lifestyle factors contribute to somatic mutations. Which of the following is a lifestyle factor? A. Contaminated water B. Lead paint C. Nuclear radiation D. Smoking tobacco

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me know if u need help blues

OpenStudy (blues):

OK, so the definition between the two is a little fuzzy. Basically environmental factors are things that the world exposes us to - for example, acid rain is part of the environment and it affects plants. Lifestyle factors are things related to choices we make, like the decision to eat a lot of junk food. Hope that makes it clearer. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so i left with A or D then right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which one of them leads to mutations though

OpenStudy (blues):

You are. I think that drinking or possibly bathing in contaminated water is not a common lifestyle choice that people make. Whereas smoking tobacco is something people consciously decide to do. So I would say the correct answer is D. I think all these things cause mutations - the question wants to distinguish between those that are sort of passive things you can't help being involved with, and choices that you consciously make.

ok thank you
