OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^8-5x^7-3x^6 greatest common factor and then factor

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

the greatest common factor is x^6 try factoring? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you walk me through it?

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

take out a x^6 from each term write like x^6(A-B-C) A. B. C being the given expressions (x^8, 5x^7, 3x^6)

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

@reason do you get it or do you want me to explain more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...im trying please explain. a little lost

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

so x^6 is your highest common factor, you see that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but not why?

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

because x^6 goes into each of the terms at least once. that's the definition of the greatest common factor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so whats the next step

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

now factor. x^6(x^2-_x-_) ( I did the first term)

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

the "_" are supposed to be numbers that go in there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you get my message?

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

yeah, here maybe this'll help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not getting how you did it. whats the entire answer maybe then I can figure out a new example

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

sorry. :( i'm not really good with explaining.

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

x^8-5x^7-3x^6 x^6(x^2-5x-3) <-- answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you oso much any ways can you help me with another type of question

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

http://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/expressions/Examples-factoring.lesson this is a bit complicated, but the basic idea is there

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

it depends on what type of question but i can try :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me find one hold on really quick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need the four common factors of 2x^2+4x

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

four? i can only find three... -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what are they? it's asking me for four im not sure

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

2, x, (x+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its multiple choice here's the options a. 1,2, 2x, 2x^2 b. 2,x, 2x, x^2 c. 1,2,x, 2x d, 2, 2x, 4x, x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? any clue lol
