If you want the Oracle version of Java, go to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html and download the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) for Linux there (use the x64 package if you've got the 64-bit version of Ubuntu). There's also a thing called OpenJDK (an open source clone of the JRE), but I'm not sure how it compares to the Orcale version. You can install that one by running `sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre` (or openjdk-7-jre if you want Java 7) from a command line (or use your package manager to search for that package).

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

i couldn't get da, wats the easiest way?

Parth (parthkohli):

Do you want the Java Development Kit or the player?

Parth (parthkohli):

Because I installed my Java using the Terminal.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

I jus need regular java so i can go on websites tht require java and i need it for a skool thing

Parth (parthkohli):

Oh, you mean the plugin.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

idk but sure

Parth (parthkohli):

Can you see the Terminal icon?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

No?

Parth (parthkohli):

OK, just go the the dash and search "Terminal".

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

I'll brb.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Parth (parthkohli):

OpenStudy (opcode):

Terminal icon looks like: http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/artua/mac/512/Terminal-icon.png

Parth (parthkohli):

It's the icon on the top of the left bar.

Parth (parthkohli):

@Opcode I think he hasn't put it in the left dock... so he'd have to click on the icon with the Ubuntu logo.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

OHHH go to there and do wat?

OpenStudy (opcode):

mk. I don't even use Ubuntu O.o Normally it's Arch Linux with gnome 3.

Parth (parthkohli):

Search for the Terminal

Parth (parthkohli):

Ubuntu 12.10 is on my second laptop so yeah.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

k i searched terminal and a screen came up

Parth (parthkohli):

Yeah, you must click on the Terminal icon. Which directory do you see open?

Parth (parthkohli):

I mean: what is written on the Terminal screen?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

guest-D43omX@anthony-Inspiron-1501:~$ Da ^^

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Parth (parthkohli):

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Parth (parthkohli):

I mean have you installed it?

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

First step, get rid of linux. Second step, Install Java...Profit...???

Parth (parthkohli):

LOL

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

how do i get riid of linux?

OpenStudy (opcode):

... Linux is free ^_^. Windows is free but...

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

I'm also sad I read this entire thread :(. Idk why that dude was linking to Open JDK, and especially pulled out 1.6...? Idk why they have it there still(I saw it also) when the Open JDK has the 8 beta :).

Parth (parthkohli):

I think you need a Mac or Windows right now, @dmezzullo. How did you even install Ubuntu? It's a long thing.

Parth (parthkohli):

Mezz doesn't want a JDK :-)

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

I kno :p.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

i didn't install it, someone else did, this is my g mas old lap top the guy cleaned it up and put ubuntu on it and idk how to work half the stuff, i like the regular stuff... I jus really need to install Java

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-se-jre-7-download-432155.html Idk why you cannot download the linux versions here???

OpenStudy (opcode):

He doesn't know how to run it from the Terminal :O

Parth (parthkohli):

Because .TAR.GZ doesn't work on Ubuntu! They have to install packages.

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

weak, down with ubuntu!

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In the terminal tar xvf "yourtarfile".tar.gz with the corrected file name if you're having trouble with the TAR file.
