i found this explanation for multiplicity: "Multiplicity can be thought of as "How many times does the solution appear in the original equation?"" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplicity_(mathematics) this is interesting because each of the two roots only shows up once in the original equation. an example of multiplicity 2 would be if you had y = (x-1)^2 where your roots would be 1,1.
