factor 3x^2+9x+x+3.. Help?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3x^2+9x+x+3 (3x^2+9x)+(x+3) 3x(x+3)+1(x+3) what's next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distribute?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

why do that? that will just make you go back a step and get you back to (3x^2+9x)+(x+3) again

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

why not factor out that common term (x+3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Idk? that's why i'm so confused because our teacher tells us to do that.. -_-

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3x^2+9x+x+3 (3x^2+9x)+(x+3) 3x(x+3)+1(x+3) (3x+1)(x+3) ... factor out the GCF x+3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

see how I went from 3x(x+3)+1(x+3) to (3x+1)(x+3) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah I understand now :) thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok great
