Which form is correct and why?: "I will be whoever/whomever you want me to be."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"i will be whoever u want me to be."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is tricky but I believe the first response is correct. "I will be whoever you want me to be". Start by separating into two separate clauses "I will be"...." whomever/whoever you want me to be". The ENITRE second clause ( is the object of the first clause. Therefore, you would use "whoever". See: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/whomever-whoever.aspx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But if the entire second clause is the object of the first, shouldn't I use the objective form, "whomever"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no because it sounds like ur talking about a certain person,. but ur not, ur saying whoever, because it makes more sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your response doesn't make sense in terms of grammatical form. There is the subjective case and the objective case; whether the person is specific or general doesn't matter.

okay then i dont know what to tell u-.-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for trying!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That remains to be determined.

OpenStudy (anonymous):
