Can you please help me solve this problem using the elimination method. Also, could you explain to me how to do it? (not homework) Thank you!! :) 3x-5y=17 9x-15y=-4

My teacher just gave me an example problem and that's what she gave me...idk.... forget the problem :) Can you just explain how to do these kinds of problems? Please? :)

OpenStudy (ryan123345):

i got you

OpenStudy (ryan123345):

ok so first off you want to look at the first equation. You want to take out the x's because first you are gonna solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct so then x would become 12x right? because we add 3 and 9 together?

OpenStudy (ryan123345):

noooo. to do that you have to multiply the top equation by one number so you can kill the x for example...

OpenStudy (ryan123345):

you see how luis drew the -3 on the left of the equation? he did that because if he multiplyed the whole equation by -3 it would equal -9x+15y=-51

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry

OpenStudy (ryan123345):

Now since you have a negative 9 on the top and a positive 9 on the bottom you can eliminate the x's because ones positive and ones negative and they have the same coefficient. And dont be sorry luis c:
