What is the value of the y variable in the solution to the following system of equations? 5x + 4y = 1 4x + 3y = -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can some one explain how do do this??

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Hmm that's a weird way to approach it Hero :D lol Thatgirl, have you learned the method of `substitution`, or maybe the `elimination` method? :) Either method would be quite handy for solving this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ZeHanz Can you help me?!?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How can i do this with substitution?

OpenStudy (zehanz):

Multiply first eq. with 3, call it (3) Multiply second one with 4, call it (4) Subtract: (3) - (4). If you didn't make an error, you've got an equation with only x in it. Solve it. Then put the result in any other equation with y in it, to get y.

OpenStudy (zehanz):

@thatgirl666: sorry, I did it with elimination...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have another question @Hero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay
