I can figure these problems out without the negative in there. But now I have a negative!! (x+5)^2=-15 I am using b+√k and b-√k Now I set it up as x+5=√-15 and x+5=√15 Did I place the - sign correctly?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

There's no solution - any real number squared is always positive. Unless you've learned complex numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you have not been introduced to complex numbers, then there are no solutions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes the problems that I have been working do not have any - in the beginning of the problem. So its no solution I guess right?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

^ Correct. Because whenever you square a real number, the result is always positive. So for (x+5)^2=-15 if x is real, then (x+5)^2 can never equal -15.

OpenStudy (phi):

How did you get the negative? Did they give it to you, or did you start with something else ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No they gave me the negative it was in the original problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+5)^2=-15

OpenStudy (phi):

then people have already answered. No real solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thank you

OpenStudy (phi):

If you are learning about sqrt(-1) = i then you would do \[ x+5 = ±\sqrt{15} i\] and \[ x = -5 ±\sqrt{15} i\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh no we have not yet started the i

OpenStudy (phi):

ok, then no solution is good.
