factor the trinomial 6x^2+29x-5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

1. See if you can factor a common factor out of all terms.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

2. To factor a trinomial of the form ax^2 + bx + c, multiply ac. Then find two factors of ac that add up to b.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you following?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...not really... well kinda

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 time 5 is 30

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes, that's it.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

6x^2+29x-5 (3x )(2x ) [To make 6x^2] But wait, we run into an issue. We can't factor -5 and +3 given to put it in a binomial. So, we abort mission and factor it this way. Common factors for 6 and 29 are 2, but none of -5. There are no common factors. Not on either side. The product is prime.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Actually, it's -30 The first step above is to try to factor a common factor, but there isn't on here. The next step is to multiply ac. In this case, a = 6 and c = -5, so ac = -30 Now come up with two numbers that multiply to -30 and add up to b which is 29

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not prime

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@reason Keep following what I'm doing. -30 = -1 * 30 -1 + 30 = 29

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i get that.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The numbers are -1 and 30. Ok?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Ok. Now you break up the middle term into these two numbers like this: 6x^2 + 30x - x - 5 Ok so far?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Next step, is factor a common factor out of the first two terms, and factor a common factor out of last two terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

little lost now

OpenStudy (compassionate):

You're right. So now that I know you've caught onto that, I can help you solve the equation. (x )(6x ) This will give you 6x^2 Now, we need a -5 on the end (x )(6x - 1) Because -5 is prime, we can just put it on the edge. Because it is prime, we know the only factor of -1 is multiplying it by 5. (x + 5)(6x - 1) <-- This is correct, right?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

6x^2 + 30x - x - 5 6x(x + 5) -1(x + 5)

OpenStudy (compassionate):

(x + 5)(6x - 1) Lets factor it out 6x^2 -x + 30x - 5 6x^2 +29x - 5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Notice that we have a common factor of (x + 5), so factor that out: 6x(x + 5) -1(x + 5) (x + 5)(6x - 1) There's your factorization.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so i just need to remove one of the X+5?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Right, and what's left is the other factor.
