Can Someone help me with this and explain please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 3\times10^{8} }{ 6\times 10^{-7}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to write this number in scientific notation Possible answers: A:5 X 10^12 B: 5 X 10^14 C 5 X 10^-14 D 5 X 10^13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would be B! you multiple 3 X 10^8 power then divided by 6 X 10^-7, the you see how many zeros are in the answer and the would be your power multiplied by 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you see what I mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I just got confused hahaha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so when they talk about 'powers' and the number is ten, it pretty much just means that the power is the number of zeros in the number. For example 10^3 = 1,000. See? soo you can do it by hand or with a calculator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10^8 power = 100,000,000 (eight zeros) X 3 = 300,000,000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then use a calculator to do the bottom part of the fraction, divide it by the top and you get 500000000000000. There are 14 zeros in the problem. So you would put that as 10^14 X 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok I understand now Thank you.

:D NP

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the medal

NP you earned it
