Why is the fact that DNA has a negative charge so important in the gel electrophoresis process?

Since the DNA has a negative charge, when the current runs through the gel, it allows the DNA to move towards the positive end of the chamber. lol got the answer
yeah,....i too was thinkin, thanks for tip....well, DNA has a negative electric charge, and is attracted to the positive electrode. The gel resists the DNA as it moves; smaller pieces have an easier time moving through the pores in the gel and so travel further. Given a known gel preparation and electrical application, the length of a segment can be very precisely determined by the distance that it travels. It can then be cut from the gel using a scalpel.
