Lots of stuff was needed to build up the military and supply it from rubber to tin and people were encouraged to donate what they could in addition to rationing. 12. This one is a kind of controversial question, even today, but the answer it's probably looking for is the second one, to save American lives. The military, based on their experiences in taking other Japanese held strongholds (Iwo Jima, Saipan, the Philippines), felt that the casualty rates would be unacceptably high if they invaded the main island of Japan (Honshu) with conventional forces.
