I think the answer is "because agricultural production of cotton was so profitable, there was less incentive to develop industry".. I'm not sure though, I know there were fewer large cities in the South than in the North and far fewer factories. Most Southerners were plantation farmers, so they didn't invest in the industry.. And you're not bugging me, I don't mind helping. :)
