4/9 + 3r - 2/3 + 1/5r combine like terms and simplify. I need someone to walk me through the steps so that I can understand what I am doing. please and thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so the first step is your going to subtract -4/9 from -2/3: you know how to subtract fractions and find the LCD right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really, can you explain a little more please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To combine -4/9 and -2/3 they will need to have the same number in the bottom of the fraction. What is their least common multiple?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And that isn't -4/9 I meant 4/9 and -2/3 sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how can you make the bottom number the same for both fractions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THE LCD IS 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right! So now you can multiply 3/3 by 2/3 (because whatever you do to the bottom you have to do to the top and vice versa) to get 6/9. Now this fraction is compatible with 4/9 and they can be combined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what step do i do next

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now you need to subtract 6/9 from 4/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 2/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right but it will be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -2/9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we need to work with 3/r and 1/5r. We will need to do exactly the same thing to make sure they both have the same number on the bottom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15 is the LCD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually you can just leave 1/5r the same and change 3/r to 15/5r

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i show thee work to get 15/5r

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You would have to show that you multiplied 3/r by 5/5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The same as you did for the previous fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup
