-5/8 - 3/5 (to add fractions you need to find a common denominator...in this case it is 40. If the denominator are not the same, you have to make them the same. So now you have to make -5/8 and -3/5 have a denominator of 40. To do this you have to take the denominator 40, and divide it by the original denominator of your fraction, and then multiply it to the numerator, then put that number over the common denominator. -5/8.....40 divided by 8 = 5, then 5 x -5 = - 25. so it becomes -25/40 -3/5....40 divided by 5 = 8, then 8 x -3 = -24. so it becomes -24/40 Now your problem reads ...-25/40 - 24/40 now you can add them....remember it is not like multiplication in the fact that two negatives do not make a positive. -25/40 - 24/40 = - 49/40 = - 1 9/40 Do you understand ?
