Gorbachev was also partly to blame as weird as that sounds. He opened up the economy and press of the Soviet Union through his policies of glasnost and perestroika. Unfortunately, it was also a case of too much too soon for the Soviet Union. As soon as controls were lifted from the press, people started to speak out about how terrible things were in general. The Soviet economy had been on a massive decline over several years and was teetering on collapse. Things were a lot worse than the West thought they were and that contributed to cries for change. The fall of the Berlin wall, the end of East Germany, the clamoring for independence by Soviet republics, all of this contributed to a kind of "Arab Spring" effect that finally ended the Communist Party's hold on power and the Soviet Union as a whole.
