How do I simplify the equation "3b-4a-(2b+a)"? An explanation would be greatly appreciated.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The first step is to simplify the parentheses. Think of your problem as if it were: 3b - 4a -1(2b + a) You need to distribute the -1 by what is insode the parentheses: 3b - 4a - 2b - a Now combine like terms. Like terms have the same variable parts. 3b - 2b - 4a - a b - 5a
