simplify the expression 9xy2- 11xy2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got -40xy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can't tell if that's 9xy^2-11xy^2 or (9*x*y*2)-(11*x*y*2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a 2 over the y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its above the y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got -40xy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i multiplied everything

OpenStudy (zehanz):

Consider xy² as som strange foreign currency: YOu have 9xy² and you have to pay 11xy². Where does this lead to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then subtract both the numbers u multiplied

OpenStudy (zehanz):

Hey, no tricks! You have to pay! You only have 9xy² and you have to pay 11xy², so you are 2xy² short...or: -2xy²

OpenStudy (zehanz):

So there is nothing to multiply. You just have two amounts of xy² that have to be subtracted. Result -2xy²

OpenStudy (zehanz):

Hey @acullen: have you read my explanation?
