The quest for profit started and furthered the age of exploration. Why were the expeditions and first colonies profitable? You should list at least two reasons. Keep in mind the products traded, who did the work, who bought the products, and the restrictions on buying and selling.

Jamestown actually was successful in that they became a stronger colony because the lazy and weak died. Jamestown is consistently discredited because many of the original settlers died. In most of the original colonies there was a belief that if you did not work you did not eat. Therefore many people who did not work died. This in turn amassed a great deal of success for early colonies. Slavery is also a bad example because many of the original colonists could not even afford slaves. Slavery was popular among the more prestigious of colonists and much later on during the time of Abraham Lincoln.
