Very beginner question: the . sign in some equations, for example, "dim velocity = (length)/(time) = L . T -1 ." in the first classical mechanics reading (except in the reading the dot is at middle height, not a full stop as I have had to present it here) - does this signify devision?

The dot means multiplication, but \[ T^{-1} = \frac{1}{T} \] so yes, that means that \[\text{dim } v = \frac{L}{T} \]
