Can someone help me with a word problem please? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck Japan in July 2007, causing exten- sive damage. Earlier that year, a minor earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale was felt in parts of Pennsylvania. How many times more intense was the Japanese earthquake than the Pennsylvania earthquake?

this looks like a similar problem, but would i have to know the formula for en earthquake? because that's what it was using

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

in the page i posted, you just use the formula 10^(m - n) where m and n are the magnitudes of the earthquakes (m is the larger magnitude)
