Math question help me!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x^2-3x+1)- (x^2+2x+7) Answer = -5x-6 How i don't understand this ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distribute the - sign through the (x^2+2x+7) and the x^2's will cancel. then go from there

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Do you understand now? @carlenstar281

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes sorta why do I have to distribute the minus sign

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Because the opposite of a sum is the sum of the opposites.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

$$-(a+b)=(-a)+(-b)$$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I got it now thanks :)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

And now you can use $$a+b=b+a$$ to move the terms around.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of an imaginary -1 right there where the - sign it. \[(x^2-3x+1) - (x^2+2x+7)\] \[(x^2-3x+1) + (-x^2-2x-7)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x^2+-x^2=0\] they are like terms kinda like 1+-1=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you dont have to distribute it out either way they will cancel

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

@camoJAX Please use parentheses :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha gotcha

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Thanks
