Why does Bromothylmol Blue solution turn yellow when carbon dioxide is added? what reation is occuring to turn it yellow?
Hi there! I can help you. Do you understand this concept or are you completely lost?
I somewhat understand but i just dont know exactly what causes it to turn yellow.
Is carbon dioxide increasing the acidity level in the solution, causing the bromothymol blue to indicate it? What about carbon dioxide is acidic?
Yes! Carbon dioxide has a pH of 5; which means it is acidic (but not TOO acidic). A common form of carbon dioxide is baking soda. When added to water, the bromothymol blue turns yellow in reaction to the creation of an acidic substance - basically, the solution changes pH. Make sense?
Yeah that makes sense! Is it the same for the carbon dioxide your body produces?
Pretty much, but we don't necessarily see those reactions too often because it is not concentrated. Each time you breathe out CO2, it gets weakened by the other molecules that float around - oxygen, nitrogen, etc.
@crazybaconlover Have you used OpenStudy before? Are you finding your way around it easily?
Nope, I've never used it before but I'm finding my way around! Thank you very much!
You're welcome! Enjoy OS! Do you need anymore assistance today?
I think I've got it! You rock!
Awesome! And thank you. :)
