Write 6/29 as a decimal correct to the hundredths column. Enter your answer as a whole or decimal number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide 6 by 29 and write what you see to 2 decimal places.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide 6 by 29. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.2068965517

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct! And how do you express that number if you round it off to 2 decimal places?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know how do u do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 20.68965517

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. You don't MOVE the decimal point, you ignore anything past the "thousandths" place.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.2 = 2 tenths. .20 = 20 hundredths. .206 is 206 thousandths. .2068 is 2068 ten-thousandths.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is .20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES!!! Or almost... :-) We still have to round properly. Is the number that follows the ".20" 5 or larger or 4 or smaller?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 and larger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct! So we have to round the "0" in ".20" upwards to a "1". Which gives us... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.31

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm...just the "0", not both 2 and 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CORRECT!!!! And BTW, if the number following the ".20" had been 4 or less, then it would have remained ".20". So .21 is the solution to 6/29 expressed to 2 decimal places! Excellent!
