can some one help me with math problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the math problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3y=-x-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need to graph this problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

manually? or with a graphing calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide by -3 to get y by itself.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

turn this into slope intercept form y=mx + b make your equation look like this ***hint see how y is all by itself of the left side of the "=" side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

manualy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once you have the equation in the form y=mx+b, if you have graph paper, count up b units

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b is your y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need to graph this equation by plotting three points on a graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you guys for helping me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, you will know the y intercept which is (0,b) then the slope, you can find as many points as you need when you have the slope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know how to find additional points when you have the slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

peter what do you mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FIRST put it in y=mx+b form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope o is not going to be b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, b is the y intercept which means it does not move across the x axis so the x coordinate of the y intercept is 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope can you please show me a graph on microsoft

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

have you put your equation in that form? show us what you have...then ill be glad to graph it to show you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does the m stand for in y=mx+b

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

m is your slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m stands for the slope b stands for the y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does b equal

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1363354516861:dw|

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

so turn your -3y=-x-6 into y = mx + b show us what you have

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

youre welcome :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no no no, you have to divide by -3 because there is not suppose to be a number in front of the y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the whole equation.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

correct as @Hope_nicole has said ...that's why it theres no number before y in y=mx+b divide EVERYthing by -3

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

-3y=-x-6 --- -- -- -3 -3 -3 what does this come out to?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

divide by "-"3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to divide everything by -3 because Y has to be by itself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are close, remember that in front of the -x, there is really a -1x so you must divide that also. also remember dividing be a negative.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

here step by step -3 divided by -3 is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you would leave it as a fraction, so it would be 1/3...remember when multiplying be a negative, if it is two negative they cancel each other out.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

right...now -1/-3 is? (and yes you WOULD be correct in saying it = .333333...but just leaave this as 1/3..youll see why later) finally -6/-3 is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1363354909361:dw|

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

slope = rise / run so your 1 would be rise (up or down) 3 would be run (left or right)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is all so confusing

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

@Hope_nicole has given you the final equation you will have...THIS is the slope intercept form so y = 1/3x + 2 compare that to y = mx + b m is the slope b is the y intercept

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

so YOUR slope is? your y-intercept is?
