Carol and Joseph have freckles and curly red hair. All of their children, except one, also have freckles and curly red hair. Their son, Sam, has the same curly red hair but not one freckle! How can a child get a chromosome that is totally different from the original chromosomes of both parents? A) gene flow B) genetic drift C) crossing over D) natural selection
Hi there! DO you understand this question at all or are you completely lost?
im lost .
That's perfectly fine. Genetics is a topic that confuses a lot of people, hee hee. Fortunately I can help you with this! :D To start, you need to have an understanding of what each of those terms mean. Are you familiar with any of them, or would you like me to explain them with a short definition?
I'm Familiar with the term.
Okay, good. :) So let's start eliminating some of the nonsense answers. Option A is a nonsense answer, because gene flow has to do with entire populations, not just parents passing genes down to their kids. :) Do you see any others that can be eliminated?
I agree & i would say we can eliminate D too , right?
Excellent! :D Natural selection is really only talking about traits that help organisms survive (survival of the fittest). Similarly, we can get rid of one more... which one do you think that is? (Hint: it has something to do with mutations)
Or, rather, it can CAUSE mutations. :)
crossing over ?
Well; that would be a good guess, because it has a hand in causing mutations sometimes. But actually, genetic drift causes mutations, or variance, in the genes of populations, which basically feeds into natural selection. Perhaps I should have made myself more clear - sorry about that!
so crossing over is the correct answer of this question ?
Yes, it is! Do you understand this better, now? :)
yes , thank you so much! you explained better than my own teacher did! thanks again.
Wow, thank you for the compliment (and the testimonial)!. I try my best! You are very welcome. :)
