Solve 4x > 36 and x + 5 < 8. a) x < 9 or x > 3 b) 9 < x < 3 c) 3 < x < 9 d) no solution I know the left side equals 9 and the right equals 3, and I'm thinking it's C but then it's switching sides with the whole problem and that makes me think it's B. Help me!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no solution hw could x be greater than 9 and less than 3 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooohhh, okay! so you don't switch the sides at all, so that makes it weird! Right? *derp*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well wait @sjerman1 lil. help here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhhhh, i remember these... hold on it was a while ago...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know there is a sign change when moving constants but i forgot, i need to do some research to remember

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

addition and subtraction doesnt change the direction of the sign, multiplication and division do. so the answer is c @sarah.radke

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh oh oh wait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess its D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x > 36 and x + 5 < 8. x < 9 and x < 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well as per my calculation, its D ,becoz answer is contradicting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it a bad thing that i'm really confused now? :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inequality equations are nasty smtyms -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x > 36 and x + 5 < 8. x < 9 and x < 3 that is what i can say. but none of your answers match up, so either its d or im wrong. @phi can you take a look please?

OpenStudy (phi):

4x > 36 redo this one. after simplifying it you can check that it still "works" example: x=0 give 4*0> 36 0>36 No. so 0 does not work. Now look at your simplified version x < 9 with x=0: 0< 9 Now it is true. But we know 0 should not work, so you flipped the < when you shouldn't have.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i forgot the rules, but that is a very easy way to check, my apologies @sarah.radke, thank you @phi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x > 36 and x + 5 < 8. corrected to: x > 9 and x < 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooohhh! Okay, that makes sense ^.^ Thank you so much guys (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well then it goes with D :| no solution

OpenStudy (phi):

this choice b) 9 < x < 3 should not be written this way. you should only write 3< x < 9 where x is between the 2 numbers x >9 is now in between 3 and 9, so this if very confusing. I hope it's a typo. and not a real choice.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's not a typo, I checked a lot, trust me! That's what the multiple choice sheet says.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well its not exam anway :P so ask in your school tomorrow.maybe they could help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@aajugdar I wish, I'm home schooled. :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooh you are in jail :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kidding :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Imma just go ahead and put 'no solution' and hope for the best :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha x) there you go

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi how can a number be greater than 9 and less than 3????????????

OpenStudy (phi):

it is greater than 9 OR less than 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well equations with power 2 or more have solutions which are more than 2. and these are not. so there cant be two values. so I dnt think its valid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, you are right. there is no solution for Solve 4x > 36 AND x + 5 < 8.

OpenStudy (phi):

it helps to read the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much guys (: i love you all!
