-5x+3y=6 x-y=4
x - y = 4 --> x = 4 + y now sub 4 + y in for x in the 1st equation... -5x + 3y = 6 -5(4 + y) + 3y = 6 (combine like terms and solve for y) can you take it from here ?
By the way....welcome to open study...I think your gonna like it here, I do :)
thank you!
do you understand how to do the problem ?
not really..
ok....for the 2nd equation...x - y = 4...I made x the subject and put everything else on the other side of the equal sign and turned it into x = 4 + y. I then substituted 4 + y in for x in the 1st equation. Do you understand that ?
ya. and then -5 and -5x would be 10x multiply that by 4, and get 40x then add like terms of 3y & y together and get 4y so 40x+4y=6. where do i go from there?
no.... -5(4 + y) + 3y = 6 (distribute the -5 through the parenthesis) -20 - 5y + 3y = 6 -5y + 3y = 6 + 20 - 2y = 26 y = 26/-2 y = - 13 can you see how I did that ?
yep! thank you so so much. now how do i get x? sorry!
to get x, you then sub -13 in for y in either of the original equations... x - y = 4 x -(-13) = 4 x + 13 = 4 x = 4 - 13 x = - 9 lets check....sub in known values into either of the original equations... -5x + 3y = 6 -5(-9) + 3(-13) = 6 45 - 39 = 6 6 = 6 (correct) x = -9 and y = -13 or (-9,-13) Do you have any questions ?
nope! thank you so much!
your welcome ....glad to help :)
