The graph below represents which system of inequalities? y <= -2x + 3 y <= x + 3 y >= -2x + 3 y >= x + 3 y <= -3x + 2 y <= -x + 2 y > -2x + 3 y > x + 3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Hint: the lines in the graphs have slope of different signs (one slope is positive, the other is negative) the shading of the final region is in the southern most region, so it is the result of shading below the line (for each inequality)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let me know if that helps or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how to do it, but when i did the graphs, none matched the one they gave me. Can you just show me the answer?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well using my hints above, this rules out choice C this is because choice C has two negative slopes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

choice D is out because those inequalities in choice D would have shadings above the lines

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

same with B, so B is out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its not C, could it be A?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

leaving choice A as the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. haha thanks!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's A, since that is the only choice with shadings below the lines and slopes of different signs

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of the following points lie in the solution set to the following system of inequalities? y <= x - 5 y <= -x - 4 A) (1, 10) B) (-1, 10) C) (10, 1) D) (1, -10)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

for each choice, plug in the point into each inequality

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you get 2 true results, then that point is in the solution set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not B, right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct, B is out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And so is A, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant tell if A is out, or the answer.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A is out

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

y <= x - 5 10 <= 1 - 5 10 <= -4 which is FALSE

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so that's why A is out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay and so D is out to, right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no D is actually the answer, not sure how you eliminated D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me either. But yay!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of the following points lie in the solution set to the following system of inequalities? y < -3x + 3 y < x + 2 A) (1, -5) B) (1, 5) C) (5, 1) D) (-1, 5)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm probably going too fast, idk lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this is the same type of problem

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

check each answer choice by plugging in the point and make sure it makes both inequalities true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C is out though, right? i just want you to go over them with me so i don't get them wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Jim?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok sry, one sec

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

currently graphing it atm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okays. I think its D but im probably wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or A..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

C is definitely out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i thought lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

D is not in the solution set either, so that's out too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so A?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A is correct since that's in the solution set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay! thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
