What is the expression in factored form? x2 + 13x + 42

hartnn (hartnn):

@Zebralover96 Hi, \(\Huge \mathcal{\text{Welcome To OpenStudy}\ddot\smile} \) Do you know the method of factorization ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just split 13x into two terms such that sum is 13 and product is 42 and then take common

hartnn (hartnn):

for factorizing the standard quadratic expression,\( ax^2+bx+c\), we need 2 numbers whose sum is 'b' and product = ac for your Question, can you find 2 numbers whose sum = 13 and product = 42 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Assuming this is\[x ^{2}+13x+42\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, looking at the last term. you need to find out what numbers multiplied by each other are equal to 42. can you find them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Crud, you're offline. let me post a walk through for you before this gets buried. 6x7=42 so now we have (x+6) (x+7) now, lets see here. x times by x is \[x ^{2} \] x times by 7 is 7x and 6 times by x is 6x. 6x+7x=13x and finally 6 times by 7 is 42. so you can see this is equal to \[x ^{2}+13x+42\]
