What is the solution for this system of linear equations? I think I did something wrong? y=2x+10 y=3x+18 so 3x+18=2x+10 subtract 3 from both sides, so 18=1x+10 subtract 10 from both sides 8 divided by 1 = 8 so x=8? at first I added 3 to both sides at the beginning and ended up with 8 divided by 5.. which didn't seem right. So somebody check my answer please.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2x - 3x is NOT 1x or x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2x - 3x is -1x or -x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so after you subtract 3x from both sides, you should have 18 = -x+10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 18 minus 10 would be 8 then it would be x=8?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but remember that we have -x instead of x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so -x = 8 but we want x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -8?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, x = -8

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plug that into either equation to find y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-6? :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

very good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing
