How would you find the area of an equilateral triangle whose sides measure out to 16cm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, you can do 1 of 2 approaches. The first is to use the standard 1/2*b*h formula. The second is to use the area formula \[\sqrt{s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)}\] where s is the semi-perimeter of the triangle (1/2 the perimeter)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm suppose to use the standard formula. I'm just confused on how to find the Height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, one sec I'll draw it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay Thank you

Here is a not-so-greatly-drawn equilateral triangle. lol |dw:1364007763307:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We know that P = 16 cm. And since it is an equilateral triangle each side is P/3 so|dw:1364007855596:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The height can be found using the Pythagorean Theorem because if we draw a line from the base to the top we find that we split the triangle into 2 right triangles. |dw:1364007990907:dw|

Know where to go from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Somewhat.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, what do you think you need to do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would the height be 3.75 rounded? If not, than I'm definitely lost.
