Probability: a bag has 10 balls, 4 are red. Ramona picks a ball, its read and she puts it back into the bag. Carlos picks one. what is the probability that he will pick a red ball? I thought the answer would have been 4/10 ? Im confused .

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

You're correct, if there's 4 red balls and 10 balls total, the probability is 4/10. The fact that Ramona picked a red ball (and replaced it) does not affect the chance of Carlos picking a red ball - the two events are independent (one doesn't affect the other).

Medal for John Candy.

the answer is wrong however, should I simplify or something?

geerky42 (geerky42):

Yeah, you should simplify.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yes, you can simplify 4/10 by dividing the numerator by 2 and denominator by 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is 2/5 ! :) thank you guys! :)

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yep :) and no prob. 4/10 was still a correct answer, just not in the most simple form.
