Rust is iron-oxide (at least to my knowledge that is what it is). Basically, it results from oxygen in the air reacting with iron atoms in the metal. (and again, possibly other metal atoms, not 100% certain that it is only iron) So it likely did not rust because space is about as close to a perfect vacuum as you can get, or in other words, there are so few atoms floating around in space, and only a small percentage of those atoms are oxygen, thus, there just simply isn't enough oxygen atoms to start rusting the metal.
start reacting* with the metal would be the more appropriate way to phrase that than start rusting.
