For the following system, if you isolated x in the first equation to use the Substitution Method, what expression would you substitute into the second equation? -x + 2y = -6 3x + y = 8 -2y + 6 2y - 6 2y + 6 -2y - 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

get x by itself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm... no idea how to do it!:O Help me Hope! Help meeeee!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha start by having x on one side and EVERYTHING else on the other side...SO how would you get the 2y to the other side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhhhhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you would use the opposite sign of what the original is...since this is adding 2y you would do the opposite which is...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go along with the steps hun :) what is the opposite of addition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtraction? lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yupp! so then you would have -x=-2y-6...BUT the x cannot be negative so you would divide by a negative which would leave you with??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope, remeber two negatives cancel out so the -2y would become postive and so would the -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it has to be D?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, everything that has a "-" would become a "+" so in -x=-2y-6 all the "-" would become "+"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, the -2y is still negative...EVERYTHING has to be positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so.. obviously it's C.. and I'm dumb lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is correct :D and no you are not dumb! dont say that! glad i could help :D
