What was the significance of the Battle of Stalingrad? It prevented Germany from successfully gaining control of Moscow. It led to Germany's capture of the Red Army in 1943. It forced the Soviet Union to reconsider its commitment to the Allied cause. It slowed down the Russian invasion of German territory begun in 1941.

All of those answers in the question above are pretty misleading. Germany can only have wished that they could have captured and defeated the Red Army in 1943, so that answer is out. The Soviets still wanted help from the Allies in establishing a second front, so they still pressured them into when they would create one. And the Russians didn't actively invade German territory such as East Prussia years later. If anything, the Battle of Stalingrad broke the Wehrmacht's spearhead into Russia and turned the tide of Germany's fortunes in the East. I have to agree with the "least worst" answer here, though, that of Moscow -- although the Germans lost that battle nearly a year earlier and never revisited it by focusing on other fronts in 1942.
